A plaster wall can look much like a painted drywall wall from across the room. That appearance does not establish its construction. Before mounting, identify what supports the finish and what installation method the equipment permits.
Do not let a smooth surface hide the questions
Tell your installer whether the wall is known to be plaster, whether it has been repaired and whether previous work exposed its layers. Photos of any existing openings may be useful, but do not create new openings just to provide a picture.
Stud detection and fastening decisions should account for the actual wall. Guessing from the age of a Fort Worth neighborhood is not enough. A renovated room may contain a mix of old and newer construction.
Check the mount instructions
Instructions for a particular drywall-only product are not automatically suitable for plaster and lath. For example, the SANUS HLL1 manual specifically excludes plaster-and-lath installation in its drywall-only method.
If the wall condition or support cannot be established, ask for an assessment before committing to a bracket position. The preferred screen center and the practical attachment locations may need to be reconciled with a different compatible mount.
Keep finish repair in the conversation
Discuss how much alteration the project may require and who will handle cosmetic finishing if needed. Existing cracks, loose material and patchwork should be identified before work starts. Concealed cabling can also involve more than the TV mounting holes.
- Agree on the desired screen outline.
- Identify the wall construction as far as possible.
- Choose a permitted mounting method.
- Review the cable route and likely finish impact.
Careful planning is especially valuable when the room’s original finish is something you want to preserve, rather than simply cover behind a screen.
